ARTS ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS - Arts Standards for Today and Tomorrow

The Essential Academic Learning Requirements in the Arts (or EALRs as they are called in Washington State) are a set of guidelines for arts education similar to those for math and reading. Once implemented, they will ensure that every child receives a fundamental arts education. Teaching the Arts EALRs have been implemented in all Washington public schools, beginning in 2005.

The Arts EALRs were written with the collaboration of teachers, education specialists and artists throughout the State of Washington, and are designed to be within the reach of every student (learnable), every teacher (teachable), and every parent (understandable).

  1. The student UNDERSTANDS and APPLIES arts KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS.
  2. The student DEMONSTRATES thinking skills USING ARTISTIC PROCESSES.
  3. The student COMMUNICATES through the arts.
  4. The student MAKES CONNECTIONS within and across the arts, to other disciplines, life, cultures, and work.
