The BIAH Fund awarded $33,050 to the following sixteen Island cultural organizations, artists, and scholars for projects and events of benefit to the local community during 2006.  

Bainbridge Chorale             

Cappella Romana      $750

A concert by the vocal chamber ensemble, Cappella Romana, performing a program of 14th and 15th century music: Music of Byzantium: The Fall of Constantinople.

Island Music Guild

IMG Community Access Events      $3000

Continuation of the Zeitgeist Teen Bands and Dance Series and equipment for production and audio archiving of all IMG community music events.

Island Soundscape Players  

Crossovers - A Chamber Music Series      $3525

A series of three chamber music concerts presented at IMG, showcasing compositions by composers like Frank Zappa, Paul McCartney, Eric Satie, Bela Bartok, and Kurt Weill who “crossed over” from one musical form to another.

Priscilla Jones

Strings Workshop      $700

Weekend workshops, electronics, and master classes for string players, ages 5-adult, taught by guest musician Gideon Freudman and others, culminating in a public cello- bop performance by Freudman.

Sue Jane Bryant   

Musicians Choice Chamber Music Series                $1400

Two spring concerts by the Musician’s Choice Chamber Music Collective and Beau Metro Quartet at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, with educational commentary.

BI Japanese American Community
Nidoto Nai Yoni  Oral History Project              $4992

Continuation of an ongoing videotaped oral history project that collects and records interviews of Bainbridge Japanese Americans evacuated and interned during WWII. Tapes will be available for viewing at the new Memorial Visitor’s Center and other archives.

BI Historical Society  

After the Bridge Oral History Project      $1540

Continuation of an ongoing project to record and transcribe oral history interviews that concentrate on the period from the 1950’s on. Interviews will be archived for public and scholarly use at the BIHS Museum research library.

Team Yeomalt Historic Stone Masonry Workshop      $1000

A one-day workshop on the creation, care, and maintenance of historic stone work conducted by master stonemason Alan Ash, presented at Camp Yeomalt.

Team Yeomalt Yeomalt Cabin Rehabilitation Documentation      $1400

Documentation of the restoration of Yeomalt Cabin, a National Historic Register property, in black and white archival film stills and DVD color video.

Fields End

Writers Roundtables      $1243

A continuation of free monthly Writers’ Roundtables held at the Bainbridge Public Library. Programs taught by guest authors focus on fiction and non-fiction, with group discussion.

Island Theatre  Library and Potluck Play Readings      $2500

Seven free play readings at the Library and five potluck play readings in local homes, with discussions following some of the more challenging plays.

Joel Sackett                           

Close to Home      $1635

A series of black and white photographs reflecting the diversity of Bainbridge Island, to be exhibited at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum and donated to their archives.

Porter Hall 

Puppets on Parade               $2665

Free paper maché puppet-making workshops that produce giant puppets for the Fourth of July Parade. This year’s theme, “Taking Flight,” is dedicated to POP founder Wendy Jackson Hall.

Mary Granfors                       

My World of White, Black, and Color      $2225

A short documentary film featuring artwork by local school children and interviews on the subjects of artistic expression and the meaning, use, and impact of color. 

Imagine Bainbridge              

Fashion Freestyle      $1535

A weekend workshop involving 25 youth in self-expression through fashion design and production, performance, and community discussion.

Bonnie Wallace 

Last Poem on Earth:  A Jazz Requiem      $2940     

Production and presentation of an original 65-minute choral requiem with orchestral accompaniment performed at The Playhouse. Inspiration and lyrics for the music come from twelve local poets, selected from a call to Island writers to submit “the poem you would write if it were your last poem on Earth.”
