"INSPIRING THE ISLAND COMMUNITY WITH EXTRAORDINARY AND CREATIVE EXPERIENCES IN PUBLIC SPACES"

This is the mission of the Bainbridge Island Public Art Program. Funding for the public art program comes from the City of Bainbridge Island which allocates 2% of qualifying portions of capital projects for the purpose of commissioning art for public spaces. This art may be outdoor sculpture (Rain Bringer totem near the Madison Avenue Roundabout), site specific artwork (Water Quilt tile mural at the Aquatic Center), integrated functional art (inside City Hall), or temporary art projects (Island Portrait poetry banners in the Ferry Terminal or Art in the Meadow, Blakely Park).

The program is managed by the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council. Its work is carried out by the BIAHC Public Art Committee, currently comprised of volunteer members Amy Aspell, Chris Cain, Kelly Davidson, Martha Droge, Sue Entress, Klaas Hesselink, Maryann Kirkby, Robin Purcell, Toby Quitslund, Kate Ruffing (Chair), Haig Townsend, and Carla Weinheimer. Their work is assisted by BIAHC staff and Public Art Program Manager Janice Shaw. The Committee reviews municipal and community based projects to determine which projects should include public art. It also oversees collection maintenance and educational programs.

The Public Art Committee reviews municipal projects to determine which projects should include public art in accordance with the Cultural Element of the Bainbridge Island Comprehensive Plan.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS: A FUTURE VISION

Conversations about the future of public art on Bainbridge Island are generating exciting ideas about potential opportunities and community priorities. What are emerging are points of agreement within a broad spectrum of opinions and preferences.

Work will continue to gather and assimilate input for a six year Bainbridge Island Public Art Master Plan that charts the future course of public art in our community. The completed document will respond to the City's six year Capital Facilities Plan as well as other major projects undertaken by community based organizations.

Public input will be used to identify art opportunities, project priorities and Program goals. If you would like to have a voice in this work, click here to download the Public Art Vision for the Future Questionnaire. It is important to answer all questions or the non-response is given a value of zero importance.

Please return the questionnaire to the Bainbridge Public Art Program, Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council, located at the Marge Williams Center, 221 Winslow Way West, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110. If you would like to meet with a Public Art Committee member to discuss your ideas, please contact Janice Shaw, at 842-7901 or email janices@artshum.org
