INSPIRING THE ISLAND COMMUNITY WITH EXTRAORDINARY AND CREATIVE EXPERIENCES IN PUBLIC SPACES.
The
Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council oversees a municipal one
percent public art program in behalf of the City of Bainbridge Island.
The program is managed by arts administrator Janice Shaw, who works
with a volunteer committee of arts professionals. Current Public Art
Committee members are: Amy Aspell, Ginny Brewer, Matthew Coates, Kelly
Davidson, Martha Droge, Sue Entress, Klaas Hesselink, Amy Hughes, Elyse
Kane, Maryann Kirkby, Robin Purcell, and Toby Quitslund (Chair).
Projects
include site specific art commissions, architecturally integrated art, public art master plans, and design team collaborations.
Committee activities include site identification, project planning and implementation, a Juried Artists
Roster, maintenance of the public art collection, and educational
programs.
The Public Art Committee
reviews municipal projects to determine which should include public art
in accordance with the Cultural Element of the Bainbridge Island
Comprehensive Plan.
PAC's next project is Creative Grounds: Communities Building Creative Neighborhood Projects
Creative Grounds is a neighborhood driven art project that creates
community collaboration and identity. Creative Grounds will be funded
by the Public Art Program. One project will be funded annually. For
more information, guidelines, and application, please Click Here.
THE PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE SEEKS NEW MEMBERS
New members are sought to join this dynamic committee as it
participates in the redesign of the downtown streetscape, integrates
art into civic projects, and enhances the built and natural environment
through the experience of public art.
The
Committee welcomes applications from members of the community with a strong
interest in visual art and design. Members with time and experience to
assist with project management, community outreach, and technical support are especially needed at
this time. Meetings take place on the second Tuesday evening of every
month. Members also contribute additional time on projects and program
work.
Please direct a letter of interest and resume or questions to the Public Art
Program Manager at Janices@artshum.org or call 842.7901.

PUBLIC ARTS CONSULTANT SELECTED
The
Bainbridge Island Public Art Program is pleased to announce the
selection of Seattle artist Lorna Jordan as Consultant to the Winslow
Way Street Improvements and Waterfront Park Master Plan Projects. The
Artist Consultant will work with project design teams to identify
opportunities for the integration of public art into the streetscape
and park.
During a vision honed through
an 18-month community wide planning process known as Winslow Tomorrow,
gardens, art, and ecology repeatedly emerged as desired elements in the
redesign of Winslow Way and Waterfront Park.
A
five member selection panel of art professionals and community members
agreed that Lorna's work eloquently integrated these elements, in
projects like Waterworks Gardens, Westlake Gardens, the San Antonio
River Improvement Project, the Longfellow Creek Habitat Improvement
Project and the Broward County Public Art Master Plan. A gift for
placemaking also distinguishes the work of this artist.
Jordan
is recognized nationally as an award winning artist and planner. She
has received awards from the Seattle Design Commission, the National
Association of Counties, the Environmental Design Research Association,
the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the American Society
of Civil Engineers.
