Tenth Annual Bainbridge Island Student Art Contest
Sunday, March 7, 2010
Bainbridge Island celebrated a successful tribute to young people's creativity during the Tenth Annual Student Art Contest at the Bainbridge Pavilion on Sunday, March 7. Bainbridge Island's young residents and students ranging in age from kindergarten through high school competed for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in seven different categories. Over 200 entries were received, in a wonderful variety of mediums and styles.
The judges were unanimous in their decision for the Best of Show prize. It was awarded to 6th grader Mariel Gale, for her piece "Guitar Hero." This three-dimensional piece is very unique and creative - so much so that it even has its own medium. Mariel calls it a "debris sculpture." Mariel attends the Bainbridge Island Home School Support program, and won $150 in cash, a certificate of achievement, and a prize package from Oil & Water Arts, Sound Reprographics, Cafe at the Pavilion, Penelope's, SuBI Japanese Cuisine, Casa Rojas, Spice Route of India, Flowering Around Espresso, Calico Cat, Andante, and Bon Bon.
Each category had 1st place winners that received $40 in cash, 2nd place winners that received $20 in cash, and
3rd place winners that received $10 in cash. Twelve honorable mention certificates were also awarded. Every student who entered the contest received a ribbon for participating.
The Best of Show piece and each of the 1st place winners' art is on display at Oil and Water Arts, upstairs in the Winslow Mall, through the end of March, National Student Art Month.

Over its ten year history, the Student Art Contest has nurtured numerous young artists, encouraging them in their artistic pursuits and celebrating their talents. For many young people, the Student Art Contest is the first public recognition of their artistic talents and hard work. Several winners and participants have gone on to future study and careers in the arts. Photographer Jonathan Hallet won the 2009 Amy Award after high school, and has had his work shown in several Bainbridge Arts and Crafts exhibitions. Bonnie Mills participated in the 2007 and 2008 Student Art Contests. She recently won scholarship awards and recognition from the Young Photographers Alliance, based in New York, and Youth in Focus, based in Seattle. Bonnie currently attends the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and credits the Student Art Contest with helping provide her with the confidence and ambition to further her studies and pursue her passion for photography.
