11TH ANNUAL CELLULOID BAINBRIDGE
FILM FESTIVAL
Sunday, March 15, 2009
9 a.m. - 10 p.m.
The Historic Lynwood Theatre
4569 Lynwood Center Road
Free! Donations benefit the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council
The Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council presents Celluloid Bainbridge, the popular annual film festival that features local artists, as it celebrates this year's contributing filmmakers and their work on Sunday, March 15th at the Historic Lynwood Theatre. Begun by 2009 Island Treasure Kathleen Thorne in 1999, the festival continues to attract a spectrum of original material, from seasoned professionals to enthusiastic beginners. At Celluloid Bainbridge, we come together as a community to support the artists and enjoy the show.
In the spirit of doing more with less, this year's festival will be a one-day, one-screen event, with continuous viewings from 9:00 a.m. till about 10:00 p.m. Films with a thematic link will be presented in sets of appropriate duration. The first set, "Morning Meditations," includes tales of high schoolers on a work mission, adventures of the high school marimba group in Ometepe, a World War II POW, the passionate conviction of a pro-life activist, and adversity addressed by spiritual practice. (See the schedule for titles and contributors.)
"A Bainbridge Bouquet," documents the activities of individuals and groups who make Bainbridge Island what it is, whether building a straw bale house, saving a forest, or reciting poetry outdoors. The set includes Steve Stolee's "A Portrait of Louise," which spotlights island octogenarian artist Louise Mills and celebrates her creative life in the community. Stolee was awarded funding from BIAHC for the completion of this film.
"The Matinee" segment features the work of Island writer Renee Longstreet, who contributes "Forget Me Never," a made-for-TV exploration of Alzheimer's starring Mia Farrow and Martin Sheen. The Treehouse Café has generously provided space for a discussion following this showing.
"Bainbridge Millenials" is a set by and about high-school islanders, present or recent. "Knock on Wood" focuses on the adventure of the high school marimba group in Ometepe, Bainbridge Island's sister city in Nicaragua. The rest of the set celebrates the comedy, talk, tragedy, animation, experimentation, originality, imagination, and daring of young filmmakers who learned to love film right here. The set concludes with a spellbinding display of skateboarding.
"Food for Thought," a banquet of engaging shorts, includes movies about ice cream, burgers, and salmon, as well as lyrical visual delights. The stunningly filmed "Three Poems on Water" brings viewers exquisite footage of Alaska glaciers; the animation "You're the Top" illustrates the Cole Porter Song, and "Ars Magna," by Bainbridge Review writer Sean Roach, makes much ado about anagrams. The set features Lucy Ostrander's documentary, "Fumiko Hayashida, the Woman Behind the Symbol," telling the story the young Japanese-American Islander's removal from Bainbridge and her subsequent return. For this film, Ostrander was also awarded completion funding from BIAHC.
"The Evening Feature" is the work of producers Marian Rees and Anne Hopkins, recent island transplants who are very much at home here. Based on the popular 1970s book on Appalachian folk life that inspired an acclaimed Broadway play, the film "Foxfire" stars the celebrated Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn as lifelong mountain people facing the many changes that come with long life. A young John Denver is their country-singer son. "Foxfire," which aired on TV, won two Prime-Time Emmys and a host of other awards. The theatre will remain open following the showing for discussion.
This year, to encourage island filmmaking, BITV is hosting a drawing for a two-hour summer class on "cell-phone journalism," valued at $25. Perhaps next year's festival will include something shot on the lucky winner's phone.
