NEW PUBLIC ART OPPORTUNITY:
WINSLOW WAY STREETSCAPE
British architect Richard Rogers' definition of sustainability takes an interesting turn. "Design is not an added expense, it is an added value. Design often makes the difference between a place that simply exists, hoping to attract new residents and workers, and a place that can thrive for many years to come- which is the most sustainable result of all."
The 2010 Winslow Way Street Improvements Project will rebuild underground sewer, water, and storm drainage systems, widen sidewalks, reorganize downtown parking, improve non-motorized traffic options, and add rain gardens with plant filtration systems to capture and clean storm water runoff. The inclusion of public art will bring the "added value" that expresses community identity, creates visual interest, and achieves the kind of sustainability and appeal Richard Rogers described.
To this end, the Bainbridge Island Public Art Program is pleased to announce a Call to Washington Artists for a confirmed outdoor artwork and the potential for additional projects.
Confirmed Project: The artwork commission for the confirmed project is $49,500. Applications, consisting of a resume, letter of intent, and digital work samples are due Thursday, May 21, 2009, at 4pm, at the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council office, 221 Winslow Way West, Suite 201. Three finalists, selected by a panel of arts professionals and stakeholders, will receive $750 each to develop concept proposals (sketch optional) and a budget estimate.
Potential Projects: Due to uncertainties with regard to timing, funding and construction budget opportunities, it may be possible to implement additional artwork into the streetscape. During the review process for the Confirmed Project, the panel will recommend other artists for Potential Projects. The Public Art Program reserves the right to directly select any of the applicants recommended by the panel for other potential streetscape projects.
A Project Orientation and Site Walk will be held on Saturday, May 9, 10:30am, meeting at Bainbridge Performing Arts (Classroom Module), 200 Madison Avenue North.
