CREATIVE GROUNDS: COMMUNITIES BUILDING NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECTS
What would your community, organization, or neighbors do with up to $8000 to make artwork that enhances a visible or accessible space?
Last year's winning proposal was submitted by the Battle Point Neighborhood for a bus shelter designed by Laurel Wilson and Devin Johnson, to be constructed by 11 community members. The corner of this property was deeded to the City as a right-of-way by property owners Andrew and Dorothy Klavins.
Other submissions to Creative Grounds I included a storytelling amphitheatre and sculpture on library grounds, a street mural and community kiosk and bench at the end of Ericksen Avenue, and artist designed fencing improvements for the Unocal property at the corner of Winslow Way and Highway 305.
The Bainbridge Island Public Art Program is funded by the City of Bainbridge Island and managed on behalf of the City by the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council. For more information, please contact BIAHC, 206.842.7901, janices@artshum.org.

2008 PROJECT SELECTION:

2008 Creative Grounds Inaugural Project:
A neighborhood bus shelter at the corner of Battle Point Drive and Beach Street, envisioned in a computer rendering by Laurel Wilson.
Some of the Island's most beloved artworks sprang spontaneously from the inspiration and initiative of members of the community. The Public Art Committee (PAC) of the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council, drawing inspiration from local landmarks such as Frog Rock, the Ferncliff Fish Fence, Rolling Bay Barnyard Murals, and the Post Office Piano Harp, created an art opportunity in this tradition. PAC is pleased to announce that the Battle Point Bus Shelter project was selected for 2008.
"Creative Grounds: Communities Building Neighborhood Projects" will fund up to $8000 for this project which will be managed and constructed by members of the Battle Point / Olympus Beach neighborhood. Several qualified and creative projects were submitted for this inaugural opportunity.
The Bus Shelter Project
The proposed project will be sited at the northwest corner of Beach Street and Battle Point Drive. It will be an architecturally designed and community built bus stop shelter constructed out of durable, low maintenance materials. The simple design features frame construction with a translucent shed roof, a solar powered clock and light fixture, large boulders for seating, and native plant landscape enhancements. The shelter will create gathering space for school children and commuters while also serving as functional art, neighborhood gateway and landmark.
Eleven Community Members
To complete the project, eleven neighbors will contribute time, expertise and resources to this project. Laurel Wilson and Devin Johnson will provide project leadership. The Olympus Beach Community Association will take responsibility for future maintenance and site care.
